Dear Pat,
Firstly let me apologise if you are offended by me referring to you as Pat. We have never met, so it is very presumptuous of me to refer to you in such an informal manner, particularly to someone in a position such as yours. I am currently living in Ireland, and there are lots of people called Patrick, but most of them prefer to be called Pat. I hope that I haven't offended you, please tell me if I have and I will desist from calling you Pat.
My reason for writing is two-fold. Firstly, I have recently created a personal website and am running out of ideas for content, so I thought I would get a pen-pal and post my correspondence with them (with their permission of course). Then I remembered a column that appeared regularly in TNT Magazine in London and I was inspired (I don't know whether you have heard of TNT Magazine, it is a publication aimed at ex-pats from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa). This column was written by an Australian who had been in London for some time, and each week he would write to the Australian Prime Minister, informing him of the weeks events.
I am not a big supporter of Australia's current Prime Minister or his policies, so I thought I would find someone I felt a greater affinity for. I remember watching the Olympics in 2000 in Sydney, and was impressed by the althetes from Trinidad and Tobago. They were very good althetes, and they all seemed very proud of their acheivements, no matter whether they won a medal or not. I have a lot of respect for people like that, and so I thought that I would like to write to their elected leader.
I hope that you enjoy receiving my little communiques, I have been told by others that I have some affinity for writing so I will try to keep these messages entertaining. I appreciate that you are a very busy man, and so I do not expect you to reply to each of my messages. But please feel free to write back at any time. If you would prefer that I didn't post your replies on the website, that is totally fine.
