January 15, 2008When Stupidity Attacks! ...engineersSome of you may have noticed over the last few years that there has been a slight increase in the security arrangements at airports. No longer can one take live ammunition onboard, and the occassion cavity search may be required 'because you never know who a terrorist might be'. The worst thing of all though is that you can no longer take a wander up into the cockpit and check out all the dials and cool buttons. I remember doing this as a 15 yo on my first flight and loved the experience, and I feel sorry for the kids of today who won't get that experience. Boeing obviously feel these kids pain as well. So in their new 787 Dreamliner, they has installed a unique system to give the new generation of children the experience of being in the cockpit without compromising passenger safety. Well, sort of. One of the geat new features for passengers travelling on the 787 Dreamliner will be inflight Internet access. But we all know that that Heathrow to Hong Kong sector can get very dull, even with on-demand films and Internet access. So Boeing have decided to give the kids in cattle class (or Business or First Class if they are lucky) the chance to actually fly the plane! By linking the passenger data network to the flight control systems, any child with at least a modicum of computer nous about them can take control of the plan with their laptop and add a little spice to the flight. Wanna see how high this bird can go? How about a re-route over Kabul at 10,000 feet - just inside Stinger missle ranger? All of this and much more is at the fingertips of the 12yo kicking your seat behind you! Boeing 787 Dreamliner - Bringing Democracy and Freedom to Airline Passngers!
