April 20, 2007Stupidity equals cashSome people think lawyers are bottom feeders, taking money from the vulnerable. And its true, there are many lawyers who are like that, the same way there are dentists like that, and plumbers like that etc etc. But lawyers didn't just evolve out of the primordial slime, they were humans first and then evolved into the creatures they are today because of one human trait: stupidity. And whilst that trait remains prevelant in our society, there will always be a need for lawyers. Otherwise, you would have people like this guy prosecuting you for crimes you didn't commit. Chris Langdon, Telus vice-president of Network Services. "Unlocking a cellphone is copyright infringement. When you buy a handset from a carrier, it has programming on the phone. It's a copyright of the manufacturer." Erm, no Chris. To infringe copyright you have to make, or make available to others, copies of the copyrighted material. When we unlock phones, we are destroying your software and replacing it with new software. By your reasoning, if I by a copy of Ulysses and rip it up page by page into little pieces, I am breaching the Joyce Estates' copyright. Erm, no Chris. I know 'copyright' is nearly as effective a word to get politicians to legislate in your favour as 'terrorism', but you've got no chance with this one. Posted by geosta at April 20, 2007 08:59 AM
