September 07, 2005A new leafOk, it's been a little while. And thats cool, I can cope with that. But its now time for me to start being serious, and so this is how its going to happen. See I saw this film a little while ago called In Good Company. It's not a particularly great film, a little predictable but a good cast makes it enjoyable to watch. The reason for me talking about it here is that the lead character Dan Foreman (played by Dennis Quaid) is a 50-something Advertising Salesman. He is also a father of 2, with number 3 on the way; at the same time his eldest daughter wants to change colleges and go to a much more expensive but better one in New York City, and with all that going on, his company has just been bought out and his job is under threat. It placed him in a very difficult position, having to re-mortgage his house to pay for things, even whilst the continuity of his employment was suspect. What made it even worse was the fact that whether he lost his job or not had nothing to do with his ability - from what we see at the start of the film he was very good at his job and was respected by the staff under him. And this got me thinking. It got me thinking that I don't want to be in that situation. I don't want, at the age of 50, to have the continuity of my income and my enjoyment of my life to be at the mercy of someone else, I want to be in control of it. I want to be able to make as much or as little money as I like, and if I'm good at my job, I don't want to be threatened with downsizing just because "that's what's happening in the industry right now." So how am I going to get myself out of such a position. Well that's what I am beginning now. There are a couple of avenues that I am exploring at the moment, and hopefully, they can build into something. If they don't then I'll try something else. But as a pre-cursor to that, I am going to start writing on this page once a week. Each Sunday there will be a new piece up here; about what well you'll just have to come back and find out. Join me for the ride will you? :) Posted by geosta at September 7, 2005 03:30 PM
